Tips included – Filet mignon will be sold for pennies at Diamonds
Howell restaurant owner Adam Merkel expects to lose thousands of dollars, but restaurant, Diamond’s Steak and Seafood Restaurant, 101 W. Grand River Avenue, will serve up its most popular dish for pennies to celebrate an anniversary this year.
Cooks butcher about 1,000 pounds of beef a week to make filet mignon tips in the kitchen, Merkel said.
Normally, one skewer costs $15.95 at lunch and $18.95 at dinner.
For 34 days in October and early November, the price will be considerably cheaper.
“We’re celebrating our 34-year anniversary in October, and since we’re famous for our filet mignon tips, we’re going to do those for 34 cents for 34 days,” Sunday through Nov. 4, Merkel said. “The community has been good to us, so this is a way to give back.”
There will be a limit of one filet mignon tips skewer per customer per visit, and customers must purchase any entrée to get the deal, which excludes sides.
“They are more than welcome to visit as much as they want for those 34 days,” Merkel said.
Merkel has owned Diamond’s since 2010, and he move it to its new location earlier this year. Cello Ristorante, another restaurant he owns, opened in Diamond’s former location.
The recipe for the signature dish has been exactly the same since the restaurant first opened, he said.
The beef, sourced from Detroit food distributor Fairway Packing and aged 28 days for tenderness, is marinated, grilled and finished with a sweet Cajun sauce.
Jerrod and Helena Maloy said they have ordered the filet mignon tips often, and Jerrod ordered them Wednesday during the Brighton couple’s ninth anniversary lunch date at Diamond’s.
“The (sweet Cajun) flavor was great,” Jerrod Maloy said. “I’m not necessarily someone who likes anything extremely hot, but it’s doable for people who like moderation, and it has a lot of good flavor.”
